Dizziness & Hearing Loss

Overview

Dizziness and hearing loss can have many causes—ranging from inner-ear disorders to nerve-related conditions and other medical contributors.

Huntsville Ear, Nose, & Throat provides a comprehensive ENT evaluation to clarify the cause of your symptoms and outline next steps. Whether you need reassurance, medication guidance, hearing technology, or a procedure, we focus on clear explanations and a treatment plan that supports day-to-day function.

What Causes Dizziness?

“Dizziness” can describe several sensations, from feeling lightheaded to true room-spinning vertigo. The pattern of symptoms helps narrow the possibilities. As ENT specialists, we assess whether the balance organs of the inner ear are contributing and whether your history suggests conditions such as benign positional vertigo or inner-ear inflammation.

Treatment may include targeted medications, vestibular guidance, and procedure-based options when appropriate.

What Causes Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss occurs when sound cannot travel efficiently to the hearing nerve (conduction-related hearing loss) or when the hearing nerve itself is affected (sensorineural hearing loss). Each type has distinct treatment options, from wax removal and middle-ear procedures to hearing aids and implants.

A detailed evaluation helps define the type and severity of hearing loss and guides a plan aligned with your needs, lifestyle, and communication goals.

Diagnostic Procedures

Audiology Evaluation: In-office hearing testing with expert audiology partners to determine the type and severity of hearing loss.
CT Scan (can be performed in office): Imaging of the ear bones and surrounding structures to evaluate why sound may not be traveling appropriately.
MRI Scan: Imaging that evaluates the hearing and balance nerves and other deeper structures that can impact hearing.
Microscopy: A high-magnification, in-office exam used to obtain detailed visualization of the ear canal and eardrum.

Minimally Invasive and Surgical Treatments

Audiology Evaluation & Hearing Aids

We partner closely with audiologists to provide comprehensive hearing testing and personalized recommendations. For many patients, hearing aids offer meaningful improvement in communication and listening comfort.

Today’s hearing technology can be tailored to your hearing profile and daily environments, with ongoing support for fitting, adjustments, and long-term success.

Ménière’s Ear Perfusion

A minimally invasive treatment that gently dilates the natural openings of the sinus cavities to restore drainage and ventilation. Balloon sinuplasty is often performed under local anesthesia, commonly in the office, and can reduce sinus pressure and recurrent infections in appropriately selected patients.

Many people return to normal activity quickly while still achieving meaningful symptom improvement.

Eustachian Tube Dilation

A minimally invasive procedure to treat ear fullness, pressure, and hearing changes related to eustachian tube dysfunction. A small balloon is used to gently dilate the opening of the tube at the back of the nose, improving ventilation and pressure equalization in the middle ear.

This procedure may be performed in the operating room or, in select cases, with local anesthesia.

Ear Wax Removal

A gentle in-office procedure to thoroughly remove impacted wax from the ear canal. Using a microscope and specialized instruments, wax can be removed with excellent visualization and minimal irritation to the surrounding ear canal. This often provides rapid relief of blockage, fullness, and hearing reduction caused by wax buildup.

Ear Tubes

A procedure to place a small tube in the eardrum to drain fluid and equalize pressure in the middle ear. Ear tubes are commonly recommended for persistent fluid, recurrent infections, or pressure problems that affect hearing and comfort.

For children, this is typically performed as a brief outpatient procedure in the operating room; select adults may be candidates for an in-office approach.

Cochlear Implant

An advanced outpatient procedure for patients with severe hearing loss who no longer receive enough benefit from traditional hearing aids. A cochlear implant directly stimulates the hearing nerve, allowing many patients to perceive sound more clearly.

Care includes candidacy evaluation, surgery, and post-operative programming and rehabilitation to help you achieve the best possible outcome.

Bone Anchored Hearing Aid

An outpatient implant procedure designed to improve hearing in patients with certain conduction-related or mixed hearing loss, and in select cases of single-sided hearing loss. A small implant placed into the bone behind the ear transmits sound through bone conduction, bypassing problems in the ear canal or middle ear.

This can provide clearer hearing with a stable, long-term solution for appropriate candidates.

Tympanoplasty & Mastoidectomy

Outpatient surgical procedures used to address chronic ear disease and related hearing loss or drainage.

Tympanoplasty repairs a hole in the eardrum and can improve hearing while reducing recurrent infections.

Mastoidectomy treats disease in the bone behind the ear when needed for chronic infection or other pathology, improving long-term ear health and helping prevent ongoing drainage.
Huntsville Ear, Nose & Throat is proud to share an exciting milestone for hearing care in our region:

Dr. Sabina Dang recently performed the first cochlear implant procedure in North Alabama at Crestwood Medical Center. Cochlear implants are designed for people with severe hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids, and they can help improve speech understanding for appropriately selected candidates. This achievement means many North Alabama patients may now be able to receive advanced hearing implant care close to home, without traveling out of town for surgery and follow-up. If you or a loved one struggles to understand speech even with well-fitted hearing aids, contact our office to schedule a cochlear implant evaluation.
